Red Light Challenge is a pop rock band made up of two high-energy, multi-instrumental brothers from Hawaii. Brothers Sean (27) and Kyle (22) Luster were born and raised on the island of Oahu, both graduated as valedictorian of their class, and have been playing music together for fun since they were kids. Although the band typically consists of two core members, they continue to create huge soundscapes both live and in the studio using their love for songwriting and their high-energy attitudes. The brothers have developed a unique sound coming from Hawaii, while being able to incorporate catchy Pop melodies, multi-part harmonies, R&B grooves, and Rock sensibilities into their music.
The brothers from Red Light Challenge pride themselves on consistently delivering memorable live shows with songs that audiences can move to. Both their electric and acoustic sets always contain dozens of original songs and a wide range of original takes on cover songs by artists such as The Beatles, Imagine Dragons, Bruno Mars, and many more. In addition to performing and recording, the band created and put on multiple events for “Red Light Challenge, Green Light Go”, a fun, student-interactive assembly program that empowers students to achieve their goals.
To expand beyond their Hawaii roots, the band self-booked a national tour in 2010, performing at Six Flags Amusement Parks in California, Missouri, and Texas, as well as major shopping malls. They threw out hundreds of Hawaiian leis and “Live Aloha” buttons, spreading Aloha at each stop. The brothers continued performing and writing music as Sean worked on his B.S. in Business Administration and Marketing. After Sean graduated in 2013, the band self-booked a massive 42-show, 16-state Summer Tour spanning from Colorado to New England and back home to Hawaii.
In November of 2014, Red Light Challenge made history by being the first band from Hawaii to earn a Los Angeles Music Award, which took place at The Avalon Hollywood. There, they were presented the prestigious ‘Hot Adult Contemporary Artist of the Year’ award. While in Los Angeles, the band had the opportunity to meet Producer/Engineer Warren Huart (Aerosmith, The Fray, James Blunt, etc.), who wound up producing the band’s debut EP, “Lookout Mountain”, released in 2015.
After Kyle also graduated high school, the brothers used their summer to prepare for their move to Boise, Idaho, where Kyle would be working toward a Business Degree and Sean would be working to earn his Masters of Business Administration. To spread awareness of their debut album release, Red Light Challenge toured the west coast from Los Angeles, California to Vancouver, Washington before heading to Boise.
Red Light Challenge has organically grown a large fanbase in the city of Boise. The band has performed over 500 times since moving to Idaho in the summer of 2015. Additionally, in June of 2017, the brothers put a full 5-piece band together to start performing for larger events and bigger audiences. The band has already performed at Alive After Five, Art in the Park, and the Knitting Factory in Boise. Now, having rhythm guitar, drums, lead guitar, bass, keyboard, and multi-part harmonies in their arsenal, Red Light Challenge has plans to continue performing across the Pacific Northwest and record new music for radio and television throughout 2018.
